Who can participate?
All children ages 5-8 years are invited to participate!
Will I be compensated for participating?
Yes! You will receive a $5 Amazon gift card for your time.
I have more than one child in this age range. Can they all participate?
Yes! We ask that each sibling will participate separately, and that they will not watch each other’s session in order to avoid any interference. Each study completion will be compensated with a $5 Amazon gift card.
What do I need in order to participate?
All you need is a laptop or desktop computer with a Chrome or Firefox browser, reliable internet connection, and a webcam! Your computer must have the ability to record audio.
Where and when can I participate?
You can participate from your home (or anywhere with a laptop/computer) whenever it is convenient for you and your child. You can find the study link here. Once you click it, the online game will launch.
How long does it take to participate in a study?
The activity takes about 15-20 minutes.
What will my child do?
In this 15 minute research game, we are interested in how children think about where people’s actions come from. Children will hear a few stories about different characters and their families. In some stories, the character may be in jail. In other stories, one of their parents may have spent time in jail before the character was born. After hearing these stories, children will be asked questions about why the character acted the way they did in the story. For example, is it because of something inside of them (their genes, biology) or because of how they were raised? The research game will be recorded via your webcam.
Important Note: A parent needs to be present at the start of the study to consent and fill out demographics, and should remain nearby in the event of any technical difficulties.
Why is the study video recorded? Who can see the videos?
We need to record the study to make sure that a parent is present to consent and to be able to go back to the video to look at children's verbal answers. Only members of the research team will have access to the videos. Videos are initially uploaded to a secure password protected server. They are then downloaded to a secure password protected lab computers and/or hard drives within two days of your participation, and get automatically deleted from the internet. All information is confidential. We will not ask for your or your child's name, birthdate or other identifying information during the video recording.
